Summary of Blues


       In the unit of music, we learned about Blues. I know Blues is very important part of Chicago history, because Blues is a key influence to develop Rap and Rhythm and Blues. Also, through reading the article of Blues, I have more understand about. Blues history. Blues in the early days is a working song of slavery to express their faith along with feeling lost, longing for home and hope for freedom.

[From Africa to America : A Cruel Journey (1500-1800)]
A wide variety of musical styles in Africa.
Participatory in nature and it is rich in complex rhyme patterns.
Africa has many countries and a diversity of musical and cultural traditions.

[Slavery in America (1600s-1865)]
Worker songs also provided a form of communication.
Work songs set the pace and eased the pain of hard manual labour.
Africans passed their cultural and musical practices from one generation to another through and tradition.

[Freedom and Post-Civil war Period (1865-1900)]
Unfair arrangement between landowners and sharecroppers.
After slavery was abolished, more musical instrument were available to African Americans.

[The Blues Take Form: County Blues + Classic Blues (1900-1930)]
During the years of slavery, songs had been primarily work songs.
The earliest form of blues was call Country Blues.
The first Country Blues musicians were mostly men.

[Spreading the Blues: The Great Migration (1910-1960)]
The economy was strong and labour was in great demand.
Better education and increased social and political freedom.
An estimated two million African Americans left the south during the 1910s and 1920s.

The urban sound that was developed in Chicago by Blues musicians.
As elements of Blues, Jazz, and gospel merged, the Blues updated its dance music and form.
Blues performance traded in their acoustics guitar for electric ones.

Music emerged from Africa American culture during this period of time was called Soul music.
Gospel music was form of music that had been thriving in Africa American communities.
Vocalists started to blend Rhythm and Blues songs with gospel vocal styles.
